Birding at Rongtong and Surroundings
The road towards Rongtong goes through Mahanada Wildlife Sanctuary and Sukna Reserve Forest, making it an ideal place for bird watching and photography. Himalayan Bulbul, Spangled Drongo, Black-Crested Bulbul, Scarlet Minivet, Serpentine Eagle, Shikra, Golden-Fronted Leafbird, and Green Bee-eater can be spotted while traveling towards Rongtong, making it a paradise for bird watchers.
Rongtong is a small hamlet cradled in the lap of nature, boasting its greenery and aesthetic pleasure. It is located 17km from Siliguri and 7km from Sukna.
This beautiful hamlet is regularly visited by people and can be reached by road and also by toy train. Rongtong is a small railway station of Darjeeling Himalayan Railways at an altitude of 1404 ft above sea level. Picturesque views of the low Himalayas and the beauty of Mahananda Wildlife Sanctuary and Sukna Reserve Forest are magnificent, making it an ideal place for bird watching and photography.
Bird watchers can spot many colorful birds like Scarlet Minivets, Crimson Sunbird, Golden-Fronted Leafbird, Serpentine Eagle, Shikra, etc. The melodious songs of these birds are mind-blowing. Many birds use their songs as a warning call to other birds, declaring their territory.
The road towards Shivkhola will take a sharp U-turn from Rongtong, at around 7 kilometers uphill road. A steep downhill would start, taking you to a popular temple at Shivkhola, located on the banks of the Mahananda river. The serene beauty of nature is the main attraction of Shivkhola, where bird watchers can spot many species of birds.
