Pedong is a small village situated at the hills at the border West Begal and Sikkim. It is situated on the famous silk route connecting India and Tibet.Nearest important station is Kalimpong, located 22 km away and it requires 3 hours to reach journey from Siliguri by publick transport. It is located around 100 kms from Siliguri. The normal way is via Kalimpong. Regular jeep and bus services are available from Siliguri upto Kalimpong. The fares are typically Rs. 120 and Rs. 90 for jeep and bus services respectively. There is also a direct bus from NJP to Pedong around 2’o clock in the afternoon. All these vehicles take the NH 31 (previously known as NH 31A) via Mahananda Reserve forest, Kalijhora, Rambhi, Teesta to Kalimpong. From there one has to change bus or jeep to reach Pedong. The fare is around Rs. 50. The route goes via Algara; another small village near Kalimpong. It costs around Rs. 2800 to reserve a car along this route2. The second road goes via Garubathan, Neora Vally, Lava, Algara upto Pedong. This road is only used by the jeeps or buses in case the other route is blocked for some reason. But one can reserve a car and follow this route. It would take around Rs. 4000 (up-down). WHERE TO STAY There are two hotels to stay in Pedong like Dam Sang Lodge and Moktan Eldorado Lodge where food is available as well. Apart from them there are scopes for homestay as well. CLIMATE AND WHEN TO VISIT Pedong is situated around 1200 metres from the sea level which offers a pleasant climate to the area during hot Indian summer. One might need a light blanket during this time. The place glows with lush greenery during monsoon. However, there is a risk of landslides during June-July period and one has to aware of the safe driving routes during this time. Winters are cold but one may experience a clear and exciting view of the mountain ranges. The best period to visit is during the spring or autumn season. ABOUT PEDONG The village is small and a quite place which is mainly popular as an education hub for the surrounding area. The houses are mostly wooden with asbestos roof. St. George’s High school is a boarding school more than 100 years old and has around 2000 students. Apart from it there is St. Xaviers School which is upto 10 th standard and several other secondary and nursery schools. The general degree government college affiliated to North Bengal University in Pedong is starting its ‘s first session in July 2015 offering courses in several arts and science subjects. A major part of income for the locals come from the students who come here to stay and study from the surrounding areas like Kagey, Linghtse , Rhenock (Sikkim). Pedong has a Church, a Hospital, a primary school and a Military base. The is a branch of Bidhan Chandra Krishi Viswa Vidyalaya, an agricultural institute located in this area. PLACES NEARBY This place is ideal for spending two to three idle days before moving on to any other nearby tourist spots like Rishop or Lava or even to Sikkim. So if anyone have permission from military then one can hire a car upto Nathula Pass. In fact missionaries had set up a base here when they tried to preach Christianity to Tibet. Another place called Cross Hill, has a characteristic cross is famous as a fabulous view point. There is a over 300 years old monastery known as Sangchen Dorjee Monaster located nearby. Other places one can visit are Damsang fort (Damsan Gadi called by local people), SiIlery Gaon (called by the locals as new Darjeeling), Tin Chuley and Reshi River. There are comfortable resorts.
